A Puzzler’s Post-Mortem: That Icy Blue Group!
Today’s puzzle was rated as a “Moderate” challenge by the original solver, who achieved a “Perfect” score.
The GREEN group, “COMPETE IN A MODERN PENTATHLON,” was a quick solve for those familiar with the Olympic sport. It’s interesting to reflect on how “modern” this pentathlon still feels, given its historical roots! Perhaps there’s room for even more eclectic multi-sport events – Jenga-Pole Vault-Judo, anyone?
The PURPLE “___ FUND” category was another satisfying one to uncover early.
However, the BLUE group, “ENSURE, AS A VICTORY,” proved to be a familiar sticking point, particularly the inclusion of “ICE.” This isn’t the first time this exact grouping (or a very similar one with “ICE” meaning to secure a win) has appeared and caused a bit of confusion. It previously stumped some players in Connections #340 back in May 2024! “To ice a game” is a common sporting idiom for securing a win, especially in the final moments, but it can definitely be a tricky one if the phrase isn’t top of mind.
How did you fare with Connections #721? Did the “Modern Pentathlon” click instantly, or did the “ICE” in the Blue group leave you feeling a bit cold? Share your triumphs and tribulations in the comments below!
