The Future is Neon: “Cyberpunk 2” Officially Revealed as Sequel Enters Pre-Production, CD Projekt Red Teases What’s Next!

Get ready, chooms! CD Projekt Red has just dropped some exciting news for fans of Night City and beyond. The highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, previously known by its codename “Project Orion,” has officially shed its temporary moniker and will now be referred to as Cyberpunk 2. This significant update comes as the studio proudly announces the game has officially transitioned into the pre-production phase.
The journey for Cyberpunk 2 began with its formal announcement back in 2022, and CD Projekt has been diligently keeping investors and fans informed of its progress. As recently as March, the studio indicated that Project Orion was wrapping up its conceptual stage and was poised to enter pre-production “in the coming weeks.” True to their word, the latest Q1 2025 earnings results confirm that this crucial development milestone has been achieved.
While “Cyberpunk 2” is the new working title, CD Projekt clarified to The Verge that this “just means it’s another game in the Cyberpunk universe,” suggesting the final retail name could still evolve.
Despite these exciting steps forward, the development team for Cyberpunk 2 is currently a focused group of 96 developers, a modest increase from 84 in February. This is by design, as the lion’s share of CD Projekt Red’s talent, a substantial 422 employees, is currently dedicated to crafting the next major installment in their other flagship series, The Witcher 4. Meanwhile, the multiplayer Witcher spin-off, “Project Sirius,” has 49 developers, and “Project Hadar” – set to be the studio’s first original IP – has a dedicated team of 19.
These production updates were shared alongside some impressive sales achievements that underscore the enduring popularity of CD Projekt Red’s titles. The Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phantom Liberty, has now surpassed an incredible 10 million copies sold. Furthermore, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, continues to be a monumental success with over 60 million sales to its name.
Looking ahead, while the Ciri-starring The Witcher 4 is still some way off, and the newly titled Cyberpunk 2 – which will reportedly transport players to a new metropolis described as “Chicago gone wrong” – is set to follow, fans can also anticipate a Mac port of Cyberpunk 2077.
It’s clear that CD Projekt Red is hard at work building exciting futures for its beloved worlds, and the official naming and pre-production start for Cyberpunk 2 is a thrilling sign of great things to come for fans of the dystopian RPG.
