Star Wars Battlefront 2 Soars Again! Insider Tempers Sequel Hopes, Proposes Exciting “Remaster First” Plan
The Force is undeniably strong with Star Wars: Battlefront 2! The 2017 shooter is experiencing a significant resurgence in player numbers, fueled by the annual May the 4th celebrations and the critical acclaim surrounding the Star Wars TV series Andor. This renewed popularity has fans buzzing with excitement and understandably clamoring for news of a Battlefront 3.
However, fans might want to temper their expectations for an imminent sequel announcement. Mats Holm, a former live operations producer who worked on Star Wars: Battlefront 2 at developer DICE, recently shared insights on Reddit, suggesting a Battlefront 3 isn’t likely to materialize from this current wave of enthusiasm.
“I don’t expect Battlefront 3 to be announced at the end of this rally,” Holm stated, acknowledging the recent player boom. “But overall, yeah, I think there are people who are talking about it.”
So, what’s the primary hurdle? According to Holm, a major factor is that the core team responsible for Battlefront 2’s impressive turnaround and continued success has largely moved on from DICE. “We spread all over,” Holm revealed, listing destinations like Ubisoft, King, Avalanche, Mojang, and others, with some even moving abroad. “Embark has a lot of the people who made base game, but the people who made the live game did not leave in a pack. We all slowly drifted after being put on Battlefield.”
Holm expressed skepticism about DICE’s ability to recapture the magic without understanding the unique approach of the post-launch live team, which famously rescued the game from a difficult start. “If they went about it the same way as before, they will not get how we brought the game back from the abyss,” he cautioned. “If they are ‘new game, Battlefield but in Star Wars outfits’ it won’t turn out well.” He noted that only “about three people” from that pivotal live team remain at DICE, which is currently heavily invested in its next major Battlefield title.
But it’s not all grim news for Battlefront enthusiasts! Holm himself is a fan and shared a compelling vision for the franchise’s future – one that could lay a stronger foundation for an eventual sequel.
“Hear me out — no Battlefront 3 right now, but Battlefront 2 Remaster for whatever future console is arriving in 2027-28,” he proposed. “Dev time is around 2-3 years. There is a laundry list of improvements that this game could get in my opinion, and getting it updated was always on our wishlist.”
Holm believes this approach would be a “far more likely to be a success.” A successful remaster would allow a new team to become familiar with the engine and assets, building on a fresh wave of player feedback. “Once that is a success, then start work on 3,” he elaborated. “You have a team familiar with engine, assets and really could kick off developing a 3 within a much shorter time span.” This thoughtful “5-6 year plan” could be just what the series needs.
What kind of improvements could a Battlefront 2 Remaster bring? Holm’s wishlist includes highly sought-after features like cross-play, dynamic day/night cycles and weather for all planets, and even a 1-vs-1 mode. “List is endless,” he concluded, noting these were often “off the table” during live service due to production constraints.
So, while an immediate Battlefront 3 announcement seems unlikely, the current success of Battlefront 2 is a testament to its enduring appeal. And with a former developer championing a feature-rich remaster, there’s a new hope for fans to rally behind as they enjoy the game’s well-deserved resurgence.
