Space Marine 2 Siege Mode Sticks to 3 Players, But Modders (and Saber!) Unleash 12-Player Carnage & Promise More!

While official co-op remains a trio, developer Saber Interactive champions community creativity, paving the way for epic fan-made battles.

Excitement builds for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s upcoming “Siege” horde mode, but developer Saber Interactive has confirmed it will maintain the current three-player maximum for co-op, despite the community’s hopes and impressive modding breakthroughs.

Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive, explained to IGN that the three-player limit for all PvE modes, including the new Siege mode, is a deliberate design choice rooted in game balance. “As we’ve mentioned in a past interview, sticking to three players for PvE game modes (including Siege Mode) has to do with the challenge we’re able to provide,” Willits said. He elaborated that initial tests with four players made Operations missions “too easy,” and “scaling enemy assaults to justify bringing a fourth player was too great of a challenge.”

However, this official stance hasn’t stopped the resourceful Space Marine 2 community. In a spectacular display of ingenuity, modder Tom (aka Warhammer Workshop), known for the Astartes Overhaul mod, recently unveiled a jaw-dropping 12-player co-op mod. Gameplay footage showcases massive squads tackling formidable Tyranid threats like the Trygon Prime in scenes reminiscent of epic MMO boss encounters.

What makes this even more remarkable is Saber Interactive’s own enthusiastic support for these modding endeavors. “Honestly, I’m just kind of in awe of Saber’s support for the modding community,” Tom shared with IGN. “None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon — but somehow, here we are. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this huge leap forward is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do.”

While Willits confirmed Saber has “no such plans at this time” to officially expand co-op player counts beyond three for Siege mode or other PvE content, the door remains wide open for the modding community to deliver these larger-scale experiences. And they have big plans! Tom revealed that his team is already working on enhancing Siege mode and the 12-player co-op, with projects including prop hunt, PvP inside operations, “massive” horde mode updates, and, perhaps most excitingly, raid-style missions featuring “bosses that hit like trucks, take proper teamwork to bring down, as well as some other completely new mechanics.”

The official “Siege” mode itself is set to deploy on June 26th as part of Patch 8. This update also brings two new DLCs for Ultra Edition, Gold Edition, and Season Pass holders: the White Scars Chapter Pack (featuring a new Champion skin for the Assault class, three exclusive weapon skins, and cosmetic options) and the Blood Angels Cosmetic Pack (offering new armour pieces and heraldry markings).

The universe of Space Marine 2 remains dynamic, with recent datamines hinting at a new class and weapons, and the unexpected news of Space Marine 3’s early development. However, Saber assures fans that Space Marine 2’s year-one roadmap is still firmly in place, with the upcoming Siege mode having been revealed during the Warhammer Skulls 2025 broadcast.

So, while the official squad size remains fixed, the future of Space Marine 2 looks bright, fueled by both official content drops and the incredible, developer-supported ingenuity of its modding community, ensuring that the Emperor’s finest will have plenty of Tyranids to purge, one way or another!
