Great News, Porters! Hideo Kojima Announces Death Stranding Anime is in the Works!

Hold onto your BB Pods, because Hideo Kojima has just delivered another exciting piece of news for fans of his unique universe: a Death Stranding anime adaptation is officially in development!

The celebrated game creator casually dropped this fantastic revelation while discussing the upcoming live-action Death Stranding film in an interview with Vogue Japan. While detailing his cinematic ambitions for the movie, Kojima confirmed that the world of Sam Porter Bridges is set to expand into yet another beloved medium.

“I am currently working with A24 on a live-action film adaptation of Death Stranding,” Kojima explained (translation via VGC). He elaborated on his approach, distinguishing between adaptations that strictly follow the source material, like The Last of Us, and those that offer more of a fan-service experience, like The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Kojima’s vision for the film is ambitious, aiming for cinematic artistry: “While these works have their own merits, as a film enthusiast, I want to pursue the expressive potential of cinema. I aim to create a Death Stranding that can only be realised through film, one that could win awards at festivals like the Cannes Film Festival or the Venice Film Festival.”

And then came the exciting addition: “In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation.”

So there you have it – a Death Stranding anime is on its way! While further details, including a release window, remain under wraps for now, the confirmation itself is cause for celebration.

This anime news builds on the already significant buzz around the live-action film. Kojima Productions announced its partnership with the acclaimed studio A24 (known for hits like Everything Everywhere All At Once and Hereditary) in December 2023 – a pairing that promises a unique and high-quality cinematic experience. More recently, reports have linked Michael Sarnoski, director of A Quiet Place: Day One, to writing and directing duties for the film.

And if that wasn’t enough to get your chiral network buzzing, remember that the highly anticipated sequel, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, is set to land on PS5 next month, on June 25th. Our own Ed from Eurogamer, in his preview, hailed it as “a labour of love, filled with carefully balanced gameplay systems, exceptional visuals, and extraneous details and secret scenes.”

It’s clear the Death Stranding universe is not only thriving but expanding in thrilling new directions. With a promising film, an exciting anime, and a major game sequel on the horizon, fans have plenty to look forward to from the visionary mind of Hideo Kojima!
