Atomfall Summons Folk Horror: “Wicked Isle” Expansion Unleashes New Terrors & Treasures Next Week

Brace yourselves, survivors of the British apocalypse! Atomfall, the post-nuclear action game that carved its niche as a distinct “British Fallout,” is set to expand its perilous world. Developer Rebellion has just announced “Wicked Isle,” the game’s first story expansion, launching next week on June 3rd, and it promises to drag players into a fresh nightmare steeped in folk horror.

This significant update introduces an entirely new landmass, Midsummer Island, a place deeply scarred by its proximity to the infamous Windscale Atom Plant. Prepare for a highly concentrated dose of danger, as the expansion brings not only new territory but also new characters, potent skills, formidable weapons, and even divergent new endings to Atomfall’s branching narrative.

A chilling new gameplay overview trailer gives players a glimpse of what awaits on this cursed isle:

Ben Fisher, Head of Design at Rebellion, elaborated on the intensified threat: “Midsummer is located close to the Windscale Atom Plant and as a result the levels of infection in both the people and environment are higher than on the mainland.”

This increased peril comes with new adversaries. “You are going to meet new enemy factions including pirate bandits and terrifying infected druids,” Fisher warned. But hope is not lost. To combat these new horrors, players will discover a fresh arsenal: “There are new weapons to be found on the island including a devastating Blunderbuss shotgun, a new bow, a trusty cutlass, swift daggers, and the enigmatic Beekeeper’s Staff.”

Beyond weaponry, “You will also be able to acquire new skills which will aid you on your quest as well as an upgraded metal detector which will enable you to find even more loot caches,” Fisher added, promising deeper exploration and character customization.

Atomfall: Wicked Isle will be available for £14.99 / €19.99 / $19.99 across all current platforms: Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC (via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Windows Store). Xbox Game Pass subscribers will also benefit from a 10 percent discount on the expansion.

Released in March, Atomfall quickly garnered attention for its unique setting inspired by the real-life Windscale nuclear incident in 1950s Cumbria, Northern England. Its distinctly British take on post-apocalyptic survival has resonated with over 2.5 million players since launch. While Eurogamer’s review noted Atomfall is “largely competent in a lot of areas rather than being unique or genre-leading,” it also praised “the world that Rebellion created, the duplicitous main characters, and the post-war sci-fi story.”

With “Wicked Isle,” Atomfall looks set to build upon that foundation, delving deeper into the eerie and unsettling folk horror elements that give its British wasteland a unique and chilling flavor. Prepare to explore Midsummer Island and confront its sinister secrets when the expansion drops on June 3rd.
