From Top Trump Donor to Political Rival: Elon Musk Launches “America Party” to Disrupt Congress

WASHINGTON – In a move poised to shake up the American political landscape, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the formation of the “America Party,” a new political organization he claims will break the legislative gridlock in Washington and restore freedom.

The announcement came via a post on his social media platform, X, where Musk declared, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” His statement followed a poll he conducted asking his millions of followers if they would support such a venture.

Instead of a broad national campaign, Musk outlined a highly targeted “kingmaker” strategy. The America Party, he proposed, will concentrate its resources on winning “just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts.”

“That would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people, given the razor-thin legislative margins,” the Tesla CEO explained on Friday. He confirmed the party would caucus independently and hold “legislative discussions with both parties,” aiming to act as a crucial swing vote.

As of the announcement, the party did not appear to have filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), and no registration location was specified.

The move marks a dramatic pivot for Musk, who was the single largest donor of the 2024 presidential election, contributing over $280 million primarily to Donald Trump and other Republican candidates. Once a close ally of the second Trump administration, Musk’s relationship with the former president soured, leading to a public spat on social media over policy disagreements.

The creation of the America Party appears to be a direct result of this fallout, fueled by Musk’s vehement opposition to a major domestic policy package approved by the Trump administration just last week.

With the 2026 midterm elections on the horizon, Musk’s decision to directly engage in competitive congressional races could inject a powerful and unpredictable new force into an already deeply divided political system. His immense wealth and public platform give his political ambitions a level of credibility and potential impact far beyond that of a typical third-party effort.
